Buffalo was the 8th largest city in the United States and an industrial center in Western New York during the first half of the 20th century. However, de-industrialization in the second half of the 20th century reduced the the city’s population by half to 261,000 in 2010. Even with the loss of traditional industries, Buffalo is still the economic center of the region. However, new sectors have emerged namely financial services, technology, and healthcare. The city is also a regional center for education, and home to several colleges and universities.
