John Boyd Thacher State Park is located about 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Albany in New Scotland. The 2,155-acre (872 ha) park, for most part, is situated on top of the Helderberg Escarpment (a steep slope off a long cliff). The park is a wildlife preserve and at strategic locations, the escarpment offers visitors magnificent views of the Hudson Valley and Green Mountains in Vermont. There are more than 12 miles (20 km) of trails in Thacher State Park, with the Indian Ladder Trail being the most popular.
