The Brooklyn Bridge spans 1,596 feet (486 meters) across the East River, connecting New York City's boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Completed in 1882, the Brooklyn Bridge was the world's first steel-wire suspension bridge and today the oldest of its kind. The bridge is a New York city icon and has been designated a National Historic Landmark. The bridge comprises of two levels - the lower level carries vehicle traffic and the upper level is a wide wooden walkway reserved for pedestrians and bicyclists.
