East Village is a neighborhood located east of Greenwich Village in Downtown Manhattan. The neighborhood was once home for many German, Irish, Ukrainian, and Polish immigrants during the first half of the 19th-century. During the 1960s and 1970s, the neighborhood was the home of the counterculture movement attracting artists, musicians, and writers. Today gentrification has transformed East Village into a middle-class neighborhood, but still retains its independent culture though quieter and more refined.
