Brighton Beach is a coastal neighborhood in southern Brooklyn, adjacent to the beach resort of Coney Island. A long boardwalk stretching for about a mile (1.6 km) links Brighton Beach to Coney Island. This residential neighborhood is home to a large number of Russians and Ukrainians, who settled here beginning in the 1970s. Often referred as "Little Odessa", it's not surprising that Brighton Beach has an East European character (reminiscent of old-world Moscow) and Russian is often the first language for many residents here.
