Brooklyn is situated on the western corner of Long Island and the second largest of New York City's five boroughs. The borough is home to 2.6 million people living in dozens of ethnic neighborhoods on a land area measuring 71 sq. miles (183 sq. km). It was once an independent city until it merged with New York City in 1898. Brooklyn still feels like a city on its own with its distinct character and culture. The heart of Brooklyn is Downtown Brooklyn, the commercial and administrative hub of the borough.
