Suffolk County occupies the central and eastern half of Long Island. The county has a population of 1.5 million, similar to neighboring Nassau County but occupies a land area that is three times larger. There are several offshore islands south of Suffolk County including Fire Island and Shelter Island. In the extreme east are two long parallel peninsulas, North Folk in the north and South Folk in the south. The seat of the county is Riverhead, situated at the mouth of the Peconic River and home to around 13,000 people.
