Albany, New York State - About the City of Albany

Albany is the seat of Albany county and capital of New York State. The city is situated on the west bank of the Hudson River and about 150 miles (240 km) north of New York City. Albany's population is home to around 98,000 people with a quarter of the working population employed by the government. Albany together with the surrounding counties of Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, and Saratoga form a region known as the Capital District (also known as the Capital Region), which is home to nearly 840,000 people.
