Long Island, New York State - Around Long Island by Car

Long Island is a very large island and the largest in the United States. The island stretches 118 miles (190 km) in an east-west direction that it can take hours to get from one destination to another. The Long Island Expressway of Interstate 495 (I-495) is a major highway passing through the central region of the island. Other major highways include New York State Route 27 (NY 27) and 25A (NY 25A), with the former passing through the southern region and latter through the northern region of Long Island.
