The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is a commuter train system that crosses the entire length of Long Island. The train system covers over 700 miles (1,127 km) of track and stops at 124 stations, stretching from Manhattan in New York City to the eastern tip of Long Island. The LIRR comprises of 11 passenger lines with every branch stopping at Jamaica Station in Queens. The trains operate everyday throughout the year and around the clock. Unlike the New York City Subway, which charges a flat fare, fares on the LIRR are distance based.
