The Atlantic Ocean has a moderating effect on the climate of Long Island and therefore the climate here is mild compared to the interior of New York State. Summers here are warm and humid while winters are cold and wet. The hottest months are July and August with high temperatures ranging around 82°F (28°C) but seldom beyond 95°F (35°C). Winter is from December to February with January being the coldest month and you can expect freezing temperatures but seldom falling below 5°F (−15°C).
