Buffalo is a city that was designed to accommodate a population twice its current size, but its population has declined from 580,000 in 1950 to 259,000 in 2012. Thus Buffalo does not experience the level of traffic congestion compared to other major US cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. Traffic flows more smoothly in Buffalo and getting stuck in traffic is never as bad. Even during the peak of the commuter rush hours in the downtown area, traffic still manages to flow though at a slower pace.
