Long Island, New York State - Driving to Long Island

To get to Long Island, there are several highways passing through New York City from neighboring Connecticut and New Jersey. It is not advisable to pass the highways entering Manhattan with its horrific slow moving traffic. An alternative is the I-278 from New Jersey entering Staten Island and then across the Verrazano Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, which then connects with the Long Island Expressway. Another option is the car ferry from Bridgeport, Connecticut, to Port Jefferson on the North Shore of Suffolk County.
